01

The Philosophy of Vex

Vex is not a destroyer. This is the thing people consistently fail to understand about him, and the misunderstanding suits him well enough that he has never corrected it. He does not arrive at settlements to tear them down. He arrives to tell them the truth: that what they have built will fail, that the structures they trust are already cracked, that the leaders they follow are operating from the same flawed assumptions that produced the Breaking. He gives them information. What they do with it is their choice.

02

The Settlement of Calh

Calh is a mid-sized survivor settlement, three generations deep, governed by a council that has by all external measures done a reasonable job. Clean water. Functioning food rotation. Minimal internal violence. Vex walks in on a market day, unarmed, and asks to speak at the evening gathering. The council, confident in their community and perhaps curious about the man they have heard stories about, says yes. The gathering lasts four hours. By the end, the settlement is not the same.

03

The One Who Stays

Most of Calh makes the choice Vex expected — the choice most communities make. One person makes a different one. Not the choice to join him, and not the choice to drive him out. A third choice, one that Vex has not encountered before, delivered quietly at the edge of the settlement as he prepares to leave. He walks away from Calh thinking about it for the next three months.
