The Energy & The Chaos

How the Breaking changed the physics of the world — and what certain people learned to do with it.

The Breaking did not just damage the world — it changed its physics. Energy now behaves differently in proximity to certain individuals. Whether this is a gift, a wound, or a symptom is still debated.

01

Verve Energy

Structured, sustained, and costly. Verve energy operates like intention made physical — it requires clarity, focus, and a willingness to be depleted. It cannot be taken from someone. It can only be given, projected, or held. Champions who wield it consistently describe it as drawing from something finite — not infinite power accessed through the self, but the self, gradually converted into something that holds structure in the world. The long-term effects of sustained use are not fully understood.

02

Whorl Chaos

Unstructured, cascading, and self-sustaining once initiated. Whorl chaos operates like entropy given a direction — once started, it is easier to aim than to stop. Unlike Verve energy, it does not deplete the wielder in conventional terms. What it does instead is change them, incrementally and in ways that are difficult to reverse. Champions who have wielded it for long periods report shifts in perception, changes in what they are able to feel, and a gradual narrowing of what matters to them.

03

The Unnamed Energies

There are those who carry neither Verve nor Whorl energy in any clean form. Their abilities do not fit either classification — some combine properties of both, some exhibit properties that belong to neither. They are the most unpredictable actors in the post-Breaking world and the most studied by both factions. Both Verve and Whorl have standing protocols for what to do if they encounter one. Neither protocol involves leaving them alone.

04

Origin and Theory

The dominant theory among Verve researchers is that the Breaking released energy that had been compressed into the structure of the old world, and that certain individuals — through some combination of disposition, circumstance, and proximity — developed the ability to interact with it consciously. Whorl's theorists reject this framing as too orderly. Their position is that what the Breaking released was not energy but truth, and that what champions wield is not power but consequence.
